JACKSON, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women and Belhaven University volleyball teams slugged it out for five sets, with host BU surviving for the 3-2 win. The Owls (1-4) fell to the Blazers (1-8) by set scores of 25-20, 24-26, 25-12, 7-25, 19-17 at Rugg Arena.
Amonie Silas had the big offensive game for MUW with a match-high of 17 kills. She also had a team-leading 53 attack attempts and a .264 attack average for the evening.

Maggie Griggs added nine kills, while newcomer
Haley Ridings and junior
Llayne Skinner each chipped in seven kills.

Hannah Duran had a double-double of 25 assists and 20 digs. Senior All-American libero
Madison Suggs had a match-best 37 digs. Skinner and
Allison Carpenter booked 19 and 16 digs, respectively.
Carpenter also served up four of the Owls' nine aces as a unit.
In the crucial fifth set, The W jumped ahead 5-1, before the Blazers finally caught the guests at 10-10. A Belhaven serve error and two winning serves by Duran had the Owls up 13-10. BU would again level the set at 14-14. From that point on, there were three ties and four lead changes, until the Blazers notched the final two points for the win.
The W will next be in action on Monday, Sept. 18, when it hosts Huntingdon College at 5 p.m. in Pohl Gym.
