DECATUR, Ga. – Mississippi University for Women's volleyball team had the honor of scoring the university's first-ever win as an NCAA Division III member on Saturday morning, with its 3-0 (25-11, 25-10, 28-26) win over host Agnes Scott College at the Fall Smash tournament at Woodruff Gym. The Owls (1-2) also lost a three-set decision (25-16, 25-22, 25-23) to Guilford College in their third match of the weekend.
The Owls morning match-up versus host Agnes Scott proved to be a dominating win by The W, allowing head coach
Halee Hensley to deploy 18 different players. The Owls led wire-to-wire in set one and only trailed twice the rest of the match. In set two, trailing 2-1, MUW would erase the deficit with 10 unanswered points. In the third set, the Scotties tallied the first three points, only to see The W rattle off four-straight points and never trail again.
All-American
Maggie Griggs, who played in just two sets, had eight kills and a sterling .438 attack average. Griggs also served up six of MUW's 13 aces in the match.
Amonie Silas was again strong on the attack with a match-leading nine kills, finishing with a .217 attack average. Silas also registered three blocks (one solo and two assisted).
Senior all-American libero
Maddy Suggs led either team with 18 digs, also successfully converting 14 of 15 receptions (.933). Setter
Karmen McCrory set up 15 assists, served three aces and made six digs.
In the second bout of the day against Guilford, there were eight ties and four lead changes before GC closed out the 25-16 win with a 4-0 run at the end. In both of the final two sets, MUW had the Quakers shaking in their boots by keeping within a single point late in both sets. The W trailed 22-23 in set two and 23-24 in set three, but was unable to get over the hump in either comeback bid.
Returners
Llayne Skinner and Silas both had tremendous efforts in the Guilford loss. Skinner's all-around good match included team-leading totals in kills (9), attacks (23), and receptions (23). She hit an impressive .348 in attacks and had just one receiving error for a .968 success rate, to go along with 13 digs.
Silas had six kills and was errorless in 18 attacks, good for a .333 average. She also topped the Owls with three blocks to her credit.
Newcomer
Selena Winston's five kills in nine attempts, with zero errors, netted her the team's best attack average for the match at .556 percent.
Suggs had a match-high of 20 digs. Suggs was also perfect on fourteen receiving attempts.
The setting tandem of McCrory and
Hannah Duran had nine and six assists, respectively.
Kaylee Brown had all five of her assists in the third set.
