COLUMBUS, Mss. - The modern history of Mississippi University for Women basketball may be brief – beginning in the 2018-19 season – but
Conley Langford (Calhoun City, Miss.) etched her name in a very prominent spot during Saturday's 84-53 loss to Westminster College, in a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) contest. The loss dropped the Owls to 5-8 (4-5 SLIAC), while the Blue Jays improved to 8-8 (6-4 SLIAC).
Langford topped all scorers with 29 points (for her 21st-consecutive game in double-digit scoring). That was enough to give her the No. 1 position for MUW career scoring in the modern era of women's basketball (surpassing Rokilla Wallace's 569 points in 2018-19,2021-22). Langford, a 5-foot-6 guard, also pulled down a game-leading 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. She hit 8-of-14 shots from the floor and was 12-of-13 on free throws, accounting for 55 percent of the Owls' points versus the Blue Jays.
Although Langford's scoring total is modest compared to programs with longer basketball histories, it should be noted that the junior guard still has plenty more games left as an Owl to push that mark even higher, reaching that record plateau in just 31 games, thus far. In her MUW career, Langford is averaging 18.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game, all while shooting 40 percent from the field and 81 percent from the free throw stripe.
The bout versus Westminster was made an even tougher task as the already-short roster for The W was without the services of the team's second-leading scorer
Zoe Essary (leg).
Claire Leak added 11 points and three rebounds to the MUW totals. Aailyah Moody booked five points.
Leileigh Moody and
Jas Patrick added seven and six rebounds, respectively. Patrick and Leak each dished off three assists.
The W will next host Lyon College at home on Tuesday (Jan. 23), in the third of five-straight home games for the Owls. Tip off at Pohl Gym will be 5:30 p.m.
