JACKSON, Miss. – For the second time this season, The W volleyball topped regional rival Belhaven University in a non-conference match, this time by a 3-2 score at the Coach Rugg Arena. The Owls improved to 3-12 overall, while the Blazers fell to 9-10, with set scores of 17-25, 25-21, 14-25, 25-17, 15-13.
MUW also defeated BU in Columbus, 3-1, earlier this season on September 7.
The W's 1-2 punch of
Amonie Silas and
MC Brown accounted for 31 of the Owls 47 total kills in the match. Silas booked a match-leading 16 kills in 47 attempts, producing a team-best .213 attack average. Silas also had a pair of blocks and seven digs.
Brown was close behind Silas with 15 kills of her own and a .180 attack average for her 50 swings. Brown ended up with a double-double by amassing 13 digs, to go along with a match-high three service aces.
Avery Watts chipped in eight kills.
Senior setter
Hannah Duran made life easy for the Owl attackers by making 37 assists. Duran also notched a double-double with her 21 digs, matching teammate
Madison Kelly with both leading the contest in that category.
Kendall Clay's three blocks led all players at the net.
The win snapped a 12-match skid by MUW and will, hopefully, infuse it with some momentum when the Owls resume St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play this Friday (Oct. 18/7 p.m.) at Greenville University.
