COLUMBUS, Miss. – The W volleyball team took a respite from it league schedule and earned a resounding 3-0 victory over Welch College. The Owls improved to 4-14 overall, dousing the Flames' (10-6) by set scores of 25-16, 25-20, 25-18 at Pohl Gym.
After a convincing first set victory, the spunky Welch squad made MUW work a bit harder in sets two and three. In any case, the combination of the W's 1-2 punch of
MC Brown and
Amonie Silas was enough to smother the Flames hopes. Brown finished with a team-leading 13 kills and a match-leading .462 attack average, after making just one error in 26 tries. She also helped out on defense with nine digs.
Silas sported a .364 attack percentage, finishing with 11 kills. Silas had three errors in 22 attempts.
As a team, the Owls out-hit Welch by a .281-to-.173 margin. As it turned out, The W attack also had some aces up their sleeve – eight of them to be exact – including three each by
Madison Kelly and
Avery Watts.
Senior setter
Hannah Duran – already the school's all-time assist leader – added to her career total with 31 versus the Flames (giving her 1,042 in her four seasons). Duran finished the night with a double-double after booking 10 digs, as well. Just for good measure, Duran also had two blocks on her ledger.
Watts led MUW with three total blocks.
MUW won't have long to savor the win, returning to St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play at home on Friday (Oct. 25/7 p.m.) evening by hosting Lyon College.
