COLUMBUS, Miss. – The W men's soccer found itself taken down by the current runner-up team in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC), Webster University, 6-1 at the Roger Short Soccer Complex. The Owls fell to 0-15-0 (0-7-0 SLIAC), with the Gorloks improving to 7-5-3 (4-1-3 SLIAC).
Webster jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half before MUW's
Jordan Ware scored off of a corner kick from
Cristian Canas. It was Ware's team-leading fourth goal of the season and cut the deficit to 4-1 in the 15th minute.
Webster would add a goal in the 26th minute to take a 5-1 halftime lead. The W defenders – behind
Cole Crawford,
Daniel Holmes, and
Josh Wilcox – tamped down the Gorloks in the second stanza, permitting just one goal in the 87th minute.
MUW goalkeeper
Antonio Romero had a busy day, facing a total of 13 shots and making seven saves. Webster had 21-to-4 advantage in total shot attempts, 13-3 on goal.
With two matches remaining, the loss to Webster mathematically eliminated the Owls from any hope or a SLIAC post-season berth, as well.
Next up for The W is a SLIAC home bout versus Westminster College on Sunday (Oct. 28/1 p.m.) at the Roger Short Soccer Complex.
