Owls volleyball succumbs to Eureka in five sets

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Despite winning the first two sets of the match, The W volleyball lost a five-set St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) thriller to Eureka College, 3-2, at Pohl Gym. The Owls dropped to 2-9 overall (0-6 SLIAC), with the Red Devils improving to 3-7 (3-3 SLIAC) and winning by set scores of 20-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-23, 15-12.

MUW looked to be in cruise control early, after notching comfortable wins in the first two sets. In set three, the Owls opened up the match, 4-0, with Hannah Duran serving.  The hosts still held a 14-9 advantage when Eureka overtook them, thanks to 12 unanswered points and a 21-14 lead that seemed to change the match's complexion.

The Owls front of MC Brown, Madyson McBrayer, and Amonie Silas all finished in double-digit kill totals. Brown led the assault with 23 kills and a .238 attack average, in a school-match record 63 attempts. She also served up two aces.

Silas rolled up 16 kills and a team-best .344 attack average. McBrayer added 12 kills, a .304 attack average, to go along with 12 digs

Senior setter Hannah Duran came within one assist of setting a school match record by giving off 42 "helps" versus Eureka. Duran contributed on defense with 13 digs, for a double-double game.

Libero Madison Kelly had a team-leading 15 digs.

MUW will next play a SLIAC tri-match on October 12 (Saturday) at Fontbonne University (10 a.m.), where they will also face off versus Spalding University (12 p.m.).
