COLUMBUS, Miss. – The opening salvo of the 2024-25 season did not go as The W women's basketball team might have hoped, losing a 92-43 non-conference decision to Millsaps College at Pohl Gym. The loss left the Owls at 0-1, while the Majors improved to 2-1 on the young season.
MUW never led in its lid-lifter. The Owls trailed 26-9 after one quarter and found themselves down 50-12 at the intermission versus the deep MC squad, which led wire-to-wire. The biggest disparity came on points in the paint, where there was a Majors difference of 44-to-20 points. The Owls' bench was out-scored by a 51-18 gap, but just the fact that the MUW roster was able to have 16 players see action in a game gives hope for MUW faithful going forward.
With no players reaching double-figure scoring totals, junior
Calysia Phillips' eight points topped the Owls' team. Phillips also led MUW with seven rebounds and had a pair of blocked shots.
Senior returning all-SLIAC performer
Conley Langford finished the evening with seven points, snapping her streak of double-figure scoring games at 30 (dating back to January 7, 2023). Langford hit 2-of-5 from the floor, the lowest number of field goals attempted in her 41 career games for The W, and also made three steals.
Reyshia Hudson and
Maddie Guerin each chipped in six points. Mec Kariem booked four points, while
Claire Leak and
Natalie Valois each tallied three points.
Two points from
Sydney Pederson, along with one point apiece by
Zia Shields,
Kymani Smith,
Aaliyah Moody and
Jessica Hughes rounded out MUW's offense.
The W will not have long to adjust matters before welcoming Huntingdon College to Pohl Gym for a Sunday (Nov. 17/2 p.m.) matinee.
