COLUMBUS, Miss. – The W women's basketball slugged it out with Huntingdon College for 40 minutes, before running out of steam in an 87-73 non-conference loss at Pohl Gym. The Owls slipped to 0-2, while the Hawks improved to 1-2, on the year.
HC also remained unbeaten in the series versus MUW, 4-0.
But the Sunday afternoon matinee between the teams proved entertaining. The game featured seven ties and four lead changes.
MUW led after one quarter, 21-19, and trailed by just seven points at the half, 40-33. EC outscored The W by seven points in the second half, as well, to create separation in the final minutes of the game.
Senior
Conley Langford led MUW with 17 points. Langford made good on 6-of-10 from the field and drained 5-of-8 from beyond the arc.
Calysia Phillips was 5-of-12 shooting and went 4-for-4 from the free throw stripe, on her way to a 16-point game. Phillips also led the Owls with six rebounds, two blocks, and three steals for the afternoon.
Claire Leak and
Zia Shields each booked nine points in the setback. Each also produced five rebounds. Leak had a team-leading six assists, while Shields and Leak both created three steals on their ledger sheet.
Huntingdon held a 38-24 advantage for points in the paint and a 33-17 margin in bench points. The Owls' 24 turnovers were transitioned into 33 points by the Hawks, as well.
MUW will take to the road on Tuesday (Nov. 19/5:30 p.m.) for a non-league bout at Centenary College.
