Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Owls miss their shot versus Hendrix, 86-70

JACKSON, Miss. – A tough day shooting cost The W women's basketball in an 86-70 loss to Hendrix College in its first game at the Millsaps Classic. The Owls dropped to 1-4 on the year, while the Warriors improved to 5-3 overall.

For MUW, it came down to shooting percentages for the game. The Owls had 25 more field goal attempts (89 to 64) than did HC, but made six less baskets (32-26). That resulted in a 50-to-29 percent disparity in field goal percentage, in favor of Hendrix.

For the second-consecutive game, The W set a school single-game record for three-point field goals attempted, launching 51 from beyond the arc (and making 10) versus Hendrix. Last Tuesday versus Lyon, MUW took 45 trey tries to shatter the previous record of 34.

The Owls came out hot, scoring the first five points of the game. MUW still led, 12-11, late in the first quarter, when the Warriors closed the period on a 7-3 run to take the lead they would not relinquish, 18-15.

Hendrix led at the half, 39-28. The Warriors maintained a double-digit advantage the bulk of the third period. However, The W made a mini run in the fourth, cutting the deficit to seven points, 63-56, with 8:47 left to play on a Calysia Phillips layup. But MUW could get no closer as Hendrix extended its lead down the stretch.

Phillips had a strong all-around effort for The W with a double-double of a game high 18 points - including making three from beyond the arc - and 10 rebounds.. Phillips also had four steals and a pair of assists.

Conley Langford booked 11 points, 10 of which came in the first half, and eight rebounds. Reshya Hudson tallied nine points, hitting 4-of-6 from the field.

After a scoreless first half, Claire Leak finished the afternoon with seven points and six rebounds.

The Owls will face host Millsaps on Sunday (December 1) at 3 p.m. in their second game of the Classic.
