ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The W men's basketball finished its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) road trip with a split, falling at Webster University, 79-66, at Grant Gym. The Owls fell to 2-5 overall (1-2 SLIAC), while the Gorloks improved to 3-5 (3-0 in the SLIAC) and remained atop the league standings.
The W struggled inside in the first half, managing just one offensive rebounds and zero second-chance points. Despite that fact the Owls led for more than 15 minutes of the period.
But it was the Gorloks who took the two-point advantage, 31-29, into the halftime locker room.
The hosts carried their momentum into the second half versus the Owls. Within the first seven minutes of the second period, The W was outscored, 23-6, as WU created some separation. MUW trailed by as many as 24 points in the second stanza, as Webster maintained its double-digit advantage the entire closing period.
Senior
Dariun Doss led MUW with 14 points and seven rebounds. Doss was 5-of-13 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the free throw stripe. He also had a game-leading five assists.
Jackson Reid was The W's only other double-figurer scorer, adding 11 points to the coffers. Reid hit 5-of-10 shots from the field, while also grabbing four boards.
A trio of Owls –
Isaiah Ball,
Trent Walker, and
James Dukes – scored eight points, apiece. Ball managed four rebounds and Walker two steals. Dukes had two of MUW's four blocks in the game.
Chris Evans finished with seven points and canned a pair of three-point baskets.
For the game, both teams shot well from the field: 43 percent for The W and 48 percent for the Gorloks. Webster did hold a 43-28 rebounding advantage, resulting in 34 points in the paint.
The W will next be on the road on Thursday (Dec. 12/4 p.m.) game for a non-conference contest at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama.
