Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Mississippi University for Women baseball utilized a five-run rally in the bottom of the eighth inning for a come-from-behind win over Virginia Wesleyan University, 9-7, on Sunday. The Owls improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Marlins fell to 2-3.
The W found itself down 4-1 after five full innings, scoring just a run in the third when Matthew Wndham (1-2) scored from third as
Baron Brack (2-5) was picked off on a delayed double steal.
In the MUW half of the sixth,
Avery Benson's groundout RBI with bases loaded plated
Loren Cox (0-2) from third to make it 4-2. In the seventh, the Owls knotted the game at 4-4 after RBI doubles from
Landon Clark (1-2) and
Tyler Estabrook (2-2).
In the big eighth frame, with bases loaded, Windham was hit by a pitch to force home
Johnny Setchfield (1-4). Brack followed with a bases-clearing double to make it 8-4. An
Austin Telano (2-4) base knock drove home Brack for MUW's ninth run.
VWU scratched back for three in the ninth, but would get no closer.
Campbell McCluney – who came on the record the final out in the bottom of the seventh – was the benefactor of the Owls offensive burst in the top of the eighth, getting the victory in his first appearance of 2024.
