COLUMBUS, Miss. - Mississippi University for Women women's tennis lost its spring season opening match to NCAA Division II Lane College, 6-3, at the Garrett Courts. The Owls fell to 0-4, and the Dragons are 1-0.
Senior
Maggie Taylor – a native of Caledonia, Miss., and New Hope High School – had a hand in two of The W's three team points n the match. In doubles, Taylor teamed with
Mallory Parker to won No. 3 doubles, 8-3, salvaging the Owls' only point in pairs play.
Then, at fifth singles, Taylor steamrolled Lane's Jayla Johnson in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0.
MUW's third point of the match came at No. 3 singles. Sophomore
Kelis Griffin (Clarksdale, Miss.) played a three-set barn burner versus the Dragons' Patricia Harrell. Griffin won a nip-and-tuck first set, 7-6 (7-3 in the tie-breaker), before losing set two, 6-4. In the deciding third set pro-set, Griffin out-lasted Harrell, 12-10.
The W will next host the University of Mobile on Friday (Feb. 9/1 p.m.) at the Garrett Courts.
