Owls enhance SLIAC slot with sweep of Greenville

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Weather may have forced Mississippi University for Women to move its "home" series versus Greenville University up the road three hours to the USA Stadium complex, but the resulting St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) sweep made it worth the drive. The Owls (17-8, 8-2 SLIAC) caged the Panthers (11-20, 5-7) by scores of 7-4 and 5-4 in 10 innings.

The wins entrenched MUW in second place – behind Spalding, whom the Owls play Tuesday – in the SLIAC standings, 1.5 games ahead of third place Lyon.

Matthew Windham, the reigning SLIAC Hitter of the Week, showed why he earned the award versus Greenville. The Owls leadoff batter went 5-for-10 in the twinbill, scoring twice, with a pair of doubles. Windham drove in two runs, as well.

In game one, Windham and Baron Brack both went 2-for-5. Brack drove in three runs. Johnny Setchfield was 2-for-3 and scored three times.

On the mound, Tyler Temple improved his personal record to 5-0 with 7.0 innings versus the Panthers. Temple scattered nine hits and gave up an uncharacteristic four earned runs, leaning on six runs from The W offense in the first four frames.

Robby Canten earned his first save of the season with 2.0 innings of scoreless relief. Canten struck out four GU batters and walked none.

In game two, Owls ace Landon Clark threw 6.0 strong innings but saw his scoreless innings streak snapped at 21 when the Panthers got to him for three in the fifth. Clark struck out six and walked just two in the no-decision outing.

With the game tied at 3-3, MUW went ahead in the home half of the sixth when Setchfield scored from second on a wild pitch. However, GU knotted the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh, as it stood for the balance of regulation.

In the 10th inning, Brack reached on a fielding error at first and made his way to third on a pair of ground outs. Pinch-hitter Loren Cox was walked, bringing up second baseman Zack Egan (2-4).

Egan slapped a single up the middle to plate Brack and give the Owls their third walk-off win in SLIAC games.

Jackson Gantt, The W's third pitcher of the day, picked up the victory to improve to 5-0 on the season. Gantt tossed 2.0 innings of scoreless, one-hit, relief in gaining the win.

The two teams will meet again on Saturday afternoon in what will be a non-conference game in the standings.
