STEENS, Miss. – Just to be clear: if you hear Mississippi University for Women baseball fans talking about "Temple-Clark," they are not discussing a place of worship. Rather, they are referring to the Owls' 1-2 pitching punch of
Tyler Temple and
Landon Clark, who were once again dynamic in a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) doubleheader sweep – 6-4 and 6-0 - of co-leader Eureka College at CCA Field.
MUW (14-8, 6-2 SLIAC) vaulted itself into a tie for second in the SLIAC standings, along with Eureka (13-9, 6-2 SLIAC), after handing the Red Devils their first conference losses of 2024.
In game one, Temple went 7.0 innings, scattering six hits and allowing two earned runs. Temple struck out two and, for the second-straight game, did not walk a batter.
In the second game, Clark had one of the most dominant outings in The W's history. Clark carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning when, with one out, EC's Mike Dunne hit a slow, high-hopper over Clark and up the middle. MUW shortstop
Tyler Estabrook made a valiant effort to get to the ball deep in the hole to try to preserve the no-no, but could not make a play. But that would be all the Red Devils would get for offense, as Clark faced just three batters over the minimum.
"I was really proud of my team tonight," Clark said after his outing. "Whether it was defensively or at the plate. It makes it very easy to pitch when I can completely trust my teammates behind me."
Jackson Gantt threw a scoreless ninth to pick up the save. Gantt also got the save in game one, giving him three on the season.
In the past week, Temple and Clark have combined for some gaudy numbers from the mound. Looking at last Saturday's sweep of Blackburn, along with Friday's Eureka wins, the duo has a combined 0.58 ERA for a total of 31.0 innings of work, a 4-0 record, two shutouts, 32 strikeouts and zero walks allowed in their last two outings each.
Versus Eureka in the first game of the twinbill,
Baron Brack was 2-for-5 with a double and scored twice.
Baker Watson was 2-for-3 with a run, as well.
Austin Telano was 1-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in. Outfielder
Johnny Setchfield went 1-for-2 with an RBI triple and two runs scored.
In the second game,
Zack Egan led MUW's 12-hit attack by going 3-for-4, with a double. Leadoff hitter
Matthew Windham was 2-for-5, with a triple, a run, and two RBI. Brack – batting second in the order – went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks and a run.
Senior catcher
Avery Benson clubbed his team-leading sixth home run of 2024, with a solo shot in the seventh that gave MUW a 5-0 lead at that point.
The teams will face off again on Saturday morning, with a 10 a.m. start for the single game (which will not count as a conference game in the standings) at CCA Field.
