STEENS, Miss. – While pitching was the order of the day in Mississippi University for Women's Friday doubleheader sweep of Eureka College, Saturday's 11-10 MUW win belonged to the offenses. The Owls (15-8) and Red Devils (13-10) combined for 21 runs, 30 hits, and used 11 pitchers between them at CCA Field.
Saturday's win – which is considered a non-conference game on the schedule (unlike the Friday twinbill) – gave The W the three-game series sweep over Eureka. It was the first time that MUW had swept a series of three or more games from an opponent, since winning four over Crowley's Ridge College on March 20-21, 2021.
The Owls' 16-hit attack was cued by the top four in the batting order. The quartet collected 11 of those hits, with each producing a multi-hit game, as well. And leadoff man
Matthew Windham got the proverbial party started by going 3-for-3 with a double and sacrifice to his credit. The sophomore Windham scored four times, drove in two, drew a walk, was hit by a pitch and had two stolen bases.
The No. 2-hole batter
Zack Egan had a 3-for-4 afternoon, scoring twice. The bulk of the damage to the Red Devils came from No. 3 slot batter
Austin Telano, who was 3-for-5 with five RBI. Catcher
Cole Evans went 2-for-4 batting clean-up for The W.
No. 9 batter
Baker Watson also had a multi-hit day, going 2-for-3 with a double and sacrifice on his ledger. Watson also had one RBI.
Campbell McCluney (2-0) – the fifth of seven MUW pitchers – got the victory with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief as the benefactor of The W's three-run sixth that broke a 8-8 deadlock at the time.
Jackson Gantt earned his third save of the season, working 2.0 scoreless frames.
MUW travels to face St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) leader Spalding University on Tuesday (April 9) in Louisville, Kentucky. The Owls currently sit in a second-place tie in the SLIAC standings.
