COLUMBUS, Miss. - The W men's soccer couldn't hold a halftime lead and dropped a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) match to Eureka College, 2-1, at the Roger Short Soccer Complex. The Owls (3-12-1, 0-6-1 SLIAC) held a 1-0 advantage on the SLIAC's fifth-place Red Devils (7-9-2, 3-4-1 SLIAC) at the intermission.
MUW broke open the scoreless bout in the 24th minute, thanks to
Ethan Barnes' first goal of the season. Barnes – one of four Owls honored on Senior Day, as well – tallied when fellow senior
Kyle Morris blasted a penalty kick shot that ricocheted off of the Devils' goalie. Barnes was Johnny-on-the-spot and sent the free ball inside the far post for the 1-0 lead, which stood the balance of the half.
The W outshot EC by an 8-to-5 margin in its opening salvo. But the Red Devils came out more aggressive in the second 45-minute segment, holding an 11-5 cushion in shot attempt (and outshooting the Owls in the match, 16-13).
A by-product of the visitor's surge was a pair of goals three minutes apart – in the 57th and the 60th minutes – to take control of the scoreboard.
MUW goalkeeper
Cortland Earl posted four saves in his 90 minutes of work.
Joining Barnes and Morris in being honored for Senior Day at their final home game for The W, were
Josh Zuniga and
Trey Parnell.
The Owls will cap the 2025 campaign on Wednesday (Oct. 29/3:30 p.m.) at Lyon College, in Batesville, Arkansas.
