LORMAN, Miss. – The W women's basketball played its second exhibition game versus an NCAA Division I foe within 72 hours, dropping an 81-56 decision versus Alcorn State University at the Davey L. Whitney Health & Physical Education Complex. The game was the Owls' final tune-up (also losing at Jackson State on Monday) for the regular season opener on Friday (November 7/7 p.m.) versus Belhaven University at the Millsaps Tournament in Jackson, Mississippi.
As might be expected versus the NCAA Division III Owls, the Lady Braves led wire-to-wire. MUW trailed 22-8 after the first quarter, before clawing back to within seven points – 27-20 – on a three-point basket by
Conley Langford at the 7:25 mark of the second stanza.
But ASU closed the half on a 15-2 run to go into the locker room with a 42-26 cushion. The Lady Braves expanded that margin to 65-38 through three periods, with The W outscoring the hosts in the fourth quarter, 18-16, for the final 81-56 score.
Langford and
Mia Bowen led The W with 13 points, apiece. Langford was 5-of-15 from the floor and 3-for-9 from beyond the arc. Langford also pulled down four rebounds and was he team's co-leader with three assists.
Bowen connected on 4-of-9 field goals and went a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw stripe. Bowen also topped the Owls with eight rebounds, all off the defensive glass. She also had her squad's lone blocked shot, as well.
Tamera Ross chipped in nine points and grabbed four rebounds. Teammate
Fantasia Wilson was close behind with eight points, all from the charity stripe (going 8-or-10), and dished off three assists.
Jessica Hughes added five points, going 2-of-2 from the field.
Jakayla Smith,
Bo Ciimban,
Keayra Hughes, and
Kate Wilkins each had two points to round out the MUW scorers. Smith paced the Owls with four steals.
