COLUMBUS, Miss. – The W women's basketball lost the second half of its home-and-home non-conference season series with Belhaven University, falling by a 73-59 score at Pohl Gym. The Owls slipped to 1-9 on the season, while the Blazers improved to 7-1.
(MUW also lost at BU, 103-78, in Jackson, in what was both teams' season opener back on November 7).
The teams swapped baskets early, with four lead changes in just over two minutes of the contest. With the Owls ahead by a 5-3 score, the Blazers went on a 11-0 run over the next three minutes, to lead 14-5, to take the lead for good.
Senior transfer
Mia Bowen led all scorers, pouring in 22 points for The W. Bowen was 8-for-14 from the floor, including one three-ball, and went 5-for-7 from the free throw stripe. She barely missed a fourth-straight double-double game by grabbing nine rebounds.
Bowen also had three blocked shots to add to her school season – and career – record total, now at 38 rejections.
Fifth-year senior
Conley Langford had 11 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season and ongoing career-record 20th as an Owl. Fellow senior
Calysia Phillips came off of the bench to also tally 11 points, while dishing off a game-high four assists, as well.
Other scorers for MUW included seven points from
Jakayla Smith, five from
Jessica Hughes, and three from
Fantasia Wilson. The Blazers held a 30-16 advantage in bench scoring.
The W will next host Huntingdon College on Monday (December 15/6 p.m.) at Pohl Gym, in another non-league match-up.
