Owls baseball gets off to slow start in opening loss

JACKSON, Miss. – The W baseball never found its footing in the 2025 season opener at Millsaps College, falling by a 14-1 score at Twenty Field.  The Owls are 0-1 and the Majors are 1-0.

The lone MUW run came in the second inning. Landon Clark drew a leadoff walk and stole second. With two outs, a walk and infield single loaded the bases for Tyler Estabrook, who smacked a 1-1 pitch through the left side of the infield to plate Clark and make it 3-1 in favor of Millsaps.

For the evening, the Owls collected five hits and committed four errors. That resulted in five unearned runs crossing the plate.

MUW starting pitcher Robby Canten[u1]  (0-1) went the first inning and gave up three earned runs to absorb the loss. Canten was the first of an eventual six hurlers for the Owls, who issued 10 combined walks to the Majors.

Colton Neal and Estabrook – the eight and nine batters - each had a pair of hits, going 2-for-3, to account for four of MUW's five hits (all singles) in the game. The Nos. 1-7 spots in the Owls' order went a combined 1-for-25 and struck out 10 times.

Conversely, Millsaps amassed 14 hits in all.

The W is next slated to play at Huntingdon College on Friday (Feb. 14/5 p.m.) in Montgomery, Alabama.
