STEENS, Miss. - The W earned a split in its home-opening doubleheader – and St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contests - versus Webster University at CCA Field. The Owls (6-10, 3-1 SLIAC) fell in the opener, 7-1, before bouncing back to top the Gorloks (13-6, 3-1 SLIAC), 6-2, in the second game.
Game one was much never in doubt, as Webster tallied two in the first and single runs in the third through seventh frames. All the while, MUW remained scoreless until a bases-loaded walk to
Matthew Windham forced home
Zack Egan in the bottom of the seventh.
The W had plenty of opportunities, however, to cut into the deficit. The Owls left 13 total runners on base, eight of those stranded in scoring position.
The W managed just five hits – all singles – in game one. Conversely, Webster smacked 13 hits, including five doubles and two home runs.
Landon Clark (2-1) took his first loss of 2025 on the mound. Clark went 5.0 innings, allowing 5 earned runs on 10 hits.
In game two, junior right-hander
Chris Ellis (1-2) notched win No. 1 of 2025 with a solid 6.0 inning effort. Ellis struck out four and scattered four hits.
Ellis' only rough spot came in the first inning when, with the bases loaded, the Gorloks got a single to center that plated a run. The runner on second also tried to score, but was thrown out, Windham to second baseman Egan to catcher
Avery Benson to stem any further damage.
After that, MUW would respond with 6 unanswered runs between the second and fifth innings. Three of those runs came in the second inning alone, started by a solo homer from Benson (2-3) to even the game at 1-1. That was followed by a bases-loaded walk to
Swayze Rikard (1-2) and a run scoring on a double play grounder off the bat of
Tyler Estabrook.
Benson had an RBI single in the third. Windham then singled home a run in the fifth to make it 5-1. The Owls added an insurance run in the fifth on a squeeze bunt by Rikard in the fifth that scored
Baron Brack (2-4) from third to make it 6-1.
Campbell McCluney threw the final three innings to earn his first save of the year. McCluney face just 11 batters, allowing just a solo home run in the ninth on the board.
