Game Recap: Baseball |

Owls split at Blackburn, despite Brack’s record-setting game one

CARLINVILLE, Ill. – Baron Brack set The W baseball single game records for both home runs and runs batted in the 22-4 game one win at Blackburn College. But the Owls had to settle for a split of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) doubleheader after falling, 8-2, to the Beavers in game two.

The Owls are now 7-11 overall and 4-2 in the SLIAC.

Brack (Pike Road, Alabama), a senior outfielder, quadrupled his 2025 home run total in game one, by leaving the park three times in four at-bats. He became the first Owls' player with more than two homers in a single game (done several times since the program was established in 2018).

Bracks round-trippers were a three-run blast in the first inning, a two homer in the second, and another three-run shot in the fourth. That put MUW ahead by a score of 20-0 at the time.

Brack's total haul of eight RBI also established a new school game record, surpassing the previous mark of six. Several Owls' players shared the previous six-RBI standard, including Brack, himself, after a three-double game two weeks ago at Fontbonne in another laugher for The W (33-17).

As a team, MUW also set a team record for homers in a game versus the Beavers, with five total.  In addition to Brack's trio, Matthew Windham and Avery Benson also left the yard. Windham finished the game with an impressive line of 3-for-3, with 4 runs and 4 RBI, also lacing a double.

Benson finished 2-for-6 with two runs and two RBI to his credit. In all, the Owls had 19 hits in game one, with 10 of the extra-base variety. Starting pitcher Landon Clark (3-4, 4 runs) had two doubles, with Zach Johnson (2-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) and Elliott Turbyfill (1-1) each slapping a two-bagger, as well.

On the mound, Clark improved to 3-1 with 4.0 innings of work. He struck out eight Beavers and walked just one. Clark gave up three hits to Blackburn, including a double and single in the bottom of the fourth and officially departing the game as a benefactor of a 22-1 lead before the Beavers batted in their half of the fifth.

While game one might have felt like a walk in the park to the Owls, game two probably felt more like it was Central Park, as they were ambushed by the Blackburn bats early on. BC collected six hits and five earned runs off of second-game starter Loren Cox (0-1) in the first inning. Cox did settle down to toss two hitless frames before being lifted for the first of an eventual four relief pitchers for MUW.

The Owls had six total hits in game two, never getting closer than 5-2 after a two-run top of the fourth. Johnson went 2-for-5, as the only player with multiple hits in the twinbill capper. Brack added to his day's total by going 1-for-3, with a triple.

Next up for The W will be a three-game series at Greenville University on Friday and Saturday (April 4-5).
