MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The W baseball lost its opening game of the Firehouse Classic (hosted by Huntingdon College) to Millsaps College, 11-1 in an eight-inning, run rule game. The loss dropped the Owls to 2-8, while the Majors improved to 10-3.
Millsaps had built a 10-0 lead through 5½ frames, before MUW got its lone tally of the day in the home half of the sixth, thanks to its only two extra-base hits of the day coming in the same at-bats. With one out,
Landon Clark tripled to right. Then, with two out and runners at the corners,
Loren Cox slammed a double to left that plated Clark.
Clark – an all-region player in 2024 – continued to solidify his case to repeat, going 3-for-4 versus Millsaps. That raises his season bating average to a healthy .417 and a team-leading two triples this season.
Cox was 1-for-3 with a walk.
Zach Johnson (1-4),
Baron Brack (1-3), and
Swayze Rikard (1-2) accounted for the other Owls' hits.
Conversely, Millsaps rolled up 13 total knocks against three MUW hurlers. Starter
Will Carter (0-2) took the loss. Carter went 4.2 innings and gave up 10 of MC's hits and was charged with 10 runs.
Ethan LeBlanc gave up just three hits and a run across 3.0 innings and
Charles Poag retired to lone batter he faced.
The W will play its second game of the tourney on Saturday (March 8/12 p.m.) versus Brevard College.
