MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The W baseball took a respite from its conference slate of games to travel to Rhodes College and came out on the short end of a 10-3 score. The Owls fell to 13-13 overall, while the Lynx – who received votes in both NCAA Division III national polls – improved to 21-14.
MUW never led, as RC built a 5-0 cushion before the Owls were able to respond on the scoreboard. In the top of the fifth inning, The W got two runs back thanks to three doubles in the frame.
Baron Brack (1-4) and
Griffin Fuller (2-4, 2 runs) led off with back-to-back doubles for MUW's first run. Two outs later,
Landon Clark (1-4) doubled home Fuller to make it 5-2.
That would be as close as MUW would get. The Lynx plated four in the sixth and a single run in the seventh. The Owls' final tally came on a
Swayze Rikard (1-3, BB) RBI single in the top half of the seventh.
In addition to the three doubles,
Zach Johnson (1-4) smashed a two-out triple in the first inning, but was stranded at third.
In what was a bullpen game for both teams - each side utilized five pitchers in the contest – Clark (4-2) absorbed the loss for The W. Clark started and threw 3.0 innings, surrendering three of his four hits allowed – as well as all three runs (just one earned) – in the third inning. Clark struck out four Lynx and did not walk a batter.
The W will return to SLIAC action on Saturday (April 19), hosting Principia College in a doubleheader at CCA Field.
