STEENS, Miss. – The W baseball put on an offensive show with a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) doubleheader sweep of Principia College at CCA Field. The Owls (15-13, 11-3 SLIAC) defeated the Panthers (4-27, 1-13 SLIAC) by scores or 15-0 and 14-4, with both games called after seven innings by the 10-run rule.
MUW rolled up some impressive offensive number for the twinbill. In addition to the 29 total runs, the Owls collected 32 hits. Among them were six doubles and three home runs. The W drew 11 walks and reached five times after being hit by a pitch in the pair of games.
Griffin Fuller amassed five hits in the games, going a combined 5-for-7, scoring five runs and driving in two. Senior shortstop
Tyler Estabrook had a 4-for-7 doubleheader, scoring four runs and producing three RBI.
Junior first baseman
Zach Johnson continued his torrid hitting pace. Johnson was 4-for-8 on the day, with a double and home run, as well as scoring twice. He raised his season average to .388, as well.
Senior
Landon Clark continued to make his case as a top player in the SLIAC with an aggregate 4-for-8 day at the plate, lifting his season average to .411. Clark scored four runs and drove in three. He had a double in game two and a three-run homer in game one, helping his own cause as The W's starting pitcher.
Clark (5-2) turned in another masterful effort on the mound in the opener. Clark threw 6.0 shutout innings of 2-hit baseball. He struck out seven Panthers and did not walk a batter.
Clark has an on-going string of 15.2 scoreless innings versus SLIAC foes.
Walker Smith tossed a scoreless seventh to complete the combined shutout of PC in game one.
Baron Brack (4-9) had a pair of hits in each game, as well as scoring twice and driving in three. Among his hits was a solo homer in the fifth inning of game one.
MUW's No. 9 hitter,
Swayze Rikard, had a very productive pair of games, as well. Rikard was 4-for-6, with four runs and 4 RBI for the afternoon.
By virtue of the wins, MUW is now in a tie for second in the SLIAC standings with Spalding at 11-3.
Next up for The W is another non-conference date at NCAA III received-votes Rhodes College on Tuesday (April 22/3 p.m.) in Memphis.
