Owls softball lands 5 All-SLIAC picks & co-Freshman of the Year

BELLEVILLE, Ill. – The W Softball team, which placed third in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) regular season standings, received five all-SLIAC awards in the postseason voting. Three Owls – Brooklyn Rhodes (Vancleave, Miss.), Emilee Slade (Hatley, Miss.), and Chloe McClain (Fulton, Miss.) – were elected to the second team, while Kaitlyn Bearley (Columbia, Ill.) and Phallyn Clark (Moselle, Miss.) were third team picks.

Rhodes was also voted as the SLIAC co-Freshman of the Year, recognizing her strong efforts in the circle and with the bat as MUW's designated hitter. Rhodes sported MUW's top batting average, at .382 (34-89) and slugging percentage (.629). She had 10 doubles and a team-best four home runs. She scored 15 runs and drove in 22 more.

As a pitcher, Rhodes rolled up a team-leading nine wins (9-3 record) and a 2.04 earned run average over a team-high 75.1 innings pitched. She made 15 appearances and 11 starts, tossing one shutout. Rhodes struck out 50 batters and walked 14.

Slade, a senior catcher, hit .282 for the season (37-131), with 10 doubles and a triple to her credit. Slade led the Owls in runs scored at 27 and drove in 15, as well. She threw out five (of 26) attempted steals against her.

McClain, a junior third baseman, had a banner first year at The W. McClain slashed .333./.448/.449 and drove in a team-leading 29 runs. Among her 29 hits were seven doubles and a homer. She drew 16 walks and scored 13 runs, as well.

Bearley, a senior outfielder, batted an excellent .341 (29-85) in 33 games. Bearley scored 12 runs and drove in 16. She drew eight walks and was hit three times, helping her to a .417 on-base average. She had eight assists from the outfield in 39 total chances.

Clark, a junior pitcher, had a staff-low ERA of 1.65 for 46.2 innings of work. Clark rolled up 23 strikeouts to just seven walks issued. Clark tossed five complete games and three shutouts in 10 appearances, finishing with a 4-5 record in the regular season.

Additionally, sophomore catcher Brooklyn Wood (Lexington, Tenn.) was named to the SLIAC All-Sportsmanship Team. Wood batted .267 and played in 15 games, starting three.
