MONGOMERY, Ala. – Naysayers may espouse the old saying that "a tie is like kissing your sister." To that The W can say "pucker up," because its 2-2 draw at Huntingdon College marked a meaningful and huge step for the Owls (0-4-1), as a program.
Entering Wednesday's bout on the road, MUW was 0-5 in its all-time series versus the Hawks (1-2-1). Never mind a win, The W had never even
scored on HC, trailing 11-0 over the quintet of contests dating back to 2018.
But that all changed at the 6:03 mark of the match when MUW newcomer
Kailey Coleman beat Huntingdon netminder Caroline Masker to end the five-plus match drought and put the Owls on top, 1-0. It was Coleman's second goal of 2025.
But the Hawks bounced back to tally goals in the 8th and 18th minutes. The hosts held that 2-1 advantage to the intermission.
Then in the 64th minute, junior midfielder
Abby Warchus netted the equalizer with her first goal of the season, making it 2-2. All that remained was for The W's defense to turn HC away for the final 26 minutes to preserve the tie.
MUW goalkeeper
Cam Lopez collected six saves to do her part in thwarting the Hawks.
"It was a great collective effort," MUW Head Coach
Ana Ramos said. "We had players step up in big ways to get the tying goal and maintain the result. From start to finish, the team played together with a level that never dropped. The coaching staff is very proud of the performance tonight."
The W squad will have more than a week off, before they next head deep into the heart of Texas to face the University of St. Thomas on Friday, September 19 (5 p.m.) and then take on Ramos' alma mater - LeTourneau University (class of 2014) – on Saturday, Sept. 20 (4 p.m.).
