Owls women’s soccer falls at Webster

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -   The W women's soccer lost its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) match at Webster University on Saturday, 7-1, at the Worldwide Technology Soccer Park. The Owls fell to 2-8-1 overall (1-3-0 SLIAC), while the Gorloks, currently second in the SLIAC standings, are 6-2-1 (3-0-1 SLIAC).

WU scored first in the 7th minute of play. But in the 31st minute, MUW freshman Reagan Shinn did something not accomplished by an Owls' player in any of the three previous series meetings between the two teams: scoring a goal. Shinn took a nice feed from Layla Escobedo in front and hit the back of the net from 20 yards out to knot matters at 1-1.

But The W did not have an answer for Webster's two-time all-SLIAC player, Mia Smith. Smith had a hat trick by the intermission, accounting for the 3-1 score at the break. In the second half, Smith added two more goals and an assist.

Shinn and Abby Warchus accounted for the two shots on-goal by MUW. The duo also were responsible for all three of their team's shot attempts, as well (two by Warchus).

Owls' goalkeeper Cam Lopez had five saves in her 90 minutes of work.

The W will next play at Blackburn College on Thursday (Oct. 15/3 p.m.) in a SLIAC road match.
