Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late lapse sinks Owls at Principia

ELSAH, Ill. – The W men's soccer played Principia College close for the bulk of its St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) matchup, before a late 10-minute spurt by the hosts put things out of reach, 5-1. The Owls fell to 0-9-0 (0-3-0 SLIAC), while the Panthers improved to 3-6-0 (1-2-0 SLIAC) on their home pitch.

MUW found itself down at the intermission, 2-0. Both PC goals came within the first five minutes of the contest. Over the next 73 minutes of match time, however, the MUW defense would thwart any scoring tries by the Panthers.

Sandwiched in between that time – in the 55th minute, to be exact – The W newcomer Simon Roth made things interesting. The freshman from Bavaria, Germany, punched in his second goal of the season, unassisted, cutting the deficit to 2-1, and the Owls becoming the aggressors.

But any hopes MUW harbored for the comeback faded between the 79th and 89th minutes, when the Panthers netted three, unanswered, goals for the 5-1 final tally.

For the Owls, Sebastian Araya took five of his team's 13 shots, with two on-goal. Luis Correa and Joao Pais had three and two tries, respectively.

MUW goalkeeper Kenneth Starr had five saves, playing all 90 minutes between the pipes.

The W will next play a non-conference match at home on Tuesday (Oct. 6/6 p.m.) versus Huntingdon College at the Roger Short Soccer Complex.
