ELSAH, Ill. – The W women's soccer dominated most every statistical category, except the one that matters most, losing a 1-0 decision at Principia College, in a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) bout. The Owls fell to 1-7-0 on the year (1-2-0 SLIAC), while the Panthers upped their record to 4-4-2 (1-1-1 SLIAC).
In the opening half, it was the Owls who applied the pressure to the host Panthers. MUW held a 7-4 advantage in total shots taken, putting four attempts on-goal.
Emma Hall,
Layla Escobedo,
Reagan Shinn, and
Kiersten Taylor all sent shots at Panthers' goalie Isabella Brancati in the opening 45 minutes.
Conversely, The W defenders impeded PC's shots enough so that all four of its first-half tries were off target.
As a matter-of-fact, Principia's first shot on-goal for the match came at the 54:05 juncture, early in the second half. But unfortunately for MUW, it resulted in the lone goal of the day by either side. With the ball deep in the Owls' end, the MUW defense failed to clear and the Panthers, instead, came up with the ball and sent it to the far post, 1-0.
The W outshot Principia, 6-4, in the second half. MUW held a 13-to-8 advantage in total tries for the day, 7-2 for shots on-goal.
Escobedo and Shinn each finished with a pair of shots on frame, along with four and three attempts, respectively.
MUW goalkeeper
Cam Lopez had one save, coming in the second half.
The W will next play a non-conference match on Tuesday (Oct. 6/1 p.m. CT) versus Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia.
