COLUMBUS, Miss. - On the surface, it may seem as though The W women's soccer team's 0-0 draw at home versus Belhaven University didn't resolve much. But nothing could be further from the truth for the Owls (2-7-1) and their scoreless tie against the Blazers (4-2-2) at the Roger Short Soccer Complex.
In its first eight matches of the season, MUW had an 0-8-0 record and had been outscored, 29-1. However, since the calendar turned to October, The W has a record of 2-1-1, with three shutouts.
Wednesday's blanking of the Blazers had its own special significance. MUW was playing back-to-back games for the first time this season, both versus Collegiate Conference of the South (CCS) foes. On Tuesday, the Owls topped CCS cellar-dweller Agnes Scott College, 2-0, before forging Tuesday's tie versus the league's unbeaten, and first place, team in Belhaven.
BU held a 21-to-7 advantage in total shot attempts, but the Owls put five of their tries – 71 percent – on goal. Conversely, Belhaven had just eight of its shots (38 percent) go on frame.
MUW's
Reagan Shinn took three shots, with two on goal. Kiersten had two shot attempts off the bench, one on goal.
The W goalkeeper
Cam Lopez had all eight of her team's saves in her 90 minutes. Lopez's third shutout snapped the program's three-match losing streak versus the Blazers, as well.
