Owls drop Tucson twinbill to Aurora

TUCSON, Ariz. – The W baseball team saw its six-game win streak snapped in the desert on Friday, losing a doubleheader to perennial NCAA III power Aurora University at the Kino Sports Complex Stadium. The Owls (9-7) were topped by the Spartans (7-6) by scores of 6-3 and 10-1.

In game one, Campbell McCluney (1-1) took his first loss of 2026. McCluney went 5.0 innings, allowed 11 hits and was charged with all six earned runs, He struck out three and walked three.

Will Carter threw 2.0 innings of scoreless, two-hit relief. Carter had two Ks and a walk.

It was a day of small ball for both teams, which combined for 24 hits -13 by AU and 11 by MUW – and just one of the extra-base variety (a double by AU). Every player in the Owls' lineup had at least one hit in the game, with seniors Matthew Windham and Baron Brack each going 2-for-4.

Game two was a tidy pitcher's duel for 4 ½ frames. MUW's Robby Canten gave up just a solo home run to lead off the home half of the second and the Owls knotting matters at 1-1 in the top of the fifth on an RBI double from Jay Marbutt that plated Braden Hudson.

But the Spartans would erupt for four in its half of the fifth and another five runs in the sixth, to pull away. Canten (1-2) went 4.1 innings in taking the loss, striking out five and walking just one.

The MUW offense managed six hits, with Marbutt (2-3) and Jack Sledge (2-3) having multi-hit games. Windham, Marbutt, and Zach Johnson each had a double.
