MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The W men's track and field men's sophomore
Noel Kellum made program history as the first-ever student-athlete from the University to compete in the decathlon, Friday and Saturday (March 13-14), at the University of Montevallo Falcon Classic. Kellum finished third in the grueling 10-event compilation.
Decathlon competitors earn points based on their performances in the 100 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 meters, 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1500 meters. Kellum amassed 4,718 points, the defacto school record now, bested only by a pair of NCAA II athletes.
Kellum's – who also runs cross country and does throw events for MUW – perhaps not surprisingly, topped the seven other hearty soles competing in the decathlon by winning in the javelin (45.51m), discus (36.23m), and shot put (11.71m) events. He was also second in the 1500 (4:57.13).
Kellum was also 11th in the open javelin toss at 40.91 meters.
Kellum was one of just five men from The W competing over the weekend, due to spring break.
