COLUMBUS, Miss. - In what may well have been its most complete match of the season, thus far, The W women's soccer dropped a heartbreaking, 1-0, non-conference decision to Millsaps College at the Roger Short Soccer Complex. The Owls are now 0-4-0, while the Majors improved to 2-2-0 in 2026.
"It was one of those games what could have easily gone either way," MUW Head Coach
Valerie Greer said. "We fought hard from start to finish, just lacked the final touch to make it even or put us ahead. Overall a lot of growth from the previous games so I'm excited to see where we go from here."
The Owls' attack had its most productive outing of the young campaign. With just seven total shot attempts the previous three matches combined, MUW outshot Millsaps by an 18-to-17 margin for the day.
Owls sophomore goalkeeper
Layla Escobedo had her second-straight match of double figure saves, making 14 stops versus the Majors. MC's lone tally came in the 21st minute of play on a blast to the far post.
Eight of Escobedo's saves came in the second half, alone. But she had plenty of help from the MUW back line of Adiyah Wood, transfer and former Columbus Christian Academy player
Presley Andrews,
Asia Glass, and
Avery Bartlett to keep Millsaps at bay the final 45 minutes.
On offense, newcomer
Reagan Shinn continued to pace the attack. Shinn had five total shot tries, putting four of them directly on-goal. Veteran
Abby Warchus had four attempts and two shots on frame.
Carlie Giles (2 shots) and
Lucy Warner (1 shot) put all of their shot attempts on-goal, as well.
