COLUMBUS, Miss. – The W women's soccer team came within a few seconds of handing nationally-ranked United States Sports University a blemish on its record, but instead absorbed a 2-1 home loss at the Roger Short Soccer Complex. The Owls are now 0-5-0 on the year, while the Eagles – ranked No. 2 in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) – improved to 2-0-0.
The visiting Eagles opened scoring in the 25th minute and held that 1-0 advantage going into the halftime locker room. But early in the second half, MUW got its first goal of the young season as newcomer
Reagan Shinn found the back of the net n the 51st minute to knot the match at 1-1.
That score stood for the bulk of the second half and it appeared the teams were headed toward a draw. But as the game clock was winding down, the Eagles controlled the ball in the MUW half and blasted home the game-winning goal with jut 15 seconds left to play, handing the Owls a gut-wrenching defeat.
The W was out-shot by USSU, 23-6, but made their tries count. Five of MUW's six attempts went on goal, compared to just nine by the Eagles.

The W will open St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) play on Saturday, hosting Spalding University at 12 p.m.
