COLUMBUS, Miss. - The W women's soccer team lost its 2026 season-opening match, falling by a score of 5-0 versus Huntingdon College, at the Roger Short Soccer Complex. The Owls are 0-1-0, while the Hawks are 1-1-0.
MUW remained within striking distance after the first half, trailing 2-0. However, HC posted three unanswered second half tallies. The match was interrupted by a one-hour lightning delay in the 58th minute. When the contest resumed, the sides played into the 71st minute before the match was called by darkness.

Layla Escobedo, who was pressed into service after regular Owls' goalie
Cam Lopez was unable to answer the bell for the match, had six total saves in her collegiate debut in the nets.
MUW newcomer
Reagan Shinn led her team's attack, with three of The W's five shot attempts. Shinn also had both of the Owls' shots on-goal, as well, and both in the first half.
Seniors
Abby Warchus and
Emma Hall each had one shot try, apiece.
The two teams will square off again on Sunday (Sept. 6) at 2 p.m. in Montgomery, Alabama, to complete the home-and-home series.
