MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The location may have changed, but Sunday's rematch between The W and Huntingdon women's soccer teams took on a similar plot as the front end of last Friday's home-and-home series opener. The Hawks (2-1-0) won on their own turf, 4-0, after also topping the Owls (0-2-0) in the season opener in Columbus (5-0).
Beyond the result, alone, the two matches had eerily similar plots. On Sunday, the host Hawks built a 4-0 advantage before the contest was halted by lightning in the 64th minute, resulting in a two-hour and 24 minute delay. Play eventually resumed, to complete the requisite 70 minutes played to make the match legal.
On Friday in Columbus, HC led 5-0 before a one-hour lightning delay occurred, before that match, too, was stopped in the 71st minute de to darkness.
In Sunday's bout, unlike on Friday, Huntingdon tallied all of its goals in the first half and the Owls held the Hawks at bay after the intermission.
MUW found itself outshot by a 20-to-2 margin for the match, 12-to-1 in shot on-goal.
That resulted in eight total saves for Owls' goalkeeper
Layla Escobedo. Seven of Escobedo's stops came in the first half alone.
Reagan Shinn had The W's lone shot on frame in the first half.
The W will next be in action on Tuesday (September 8/4 p.m.) at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee.
