MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Mississippi University for Women volleyball team is now 2-8 on the season after a loss against Huntingdon College and a victory against Rust College at the Huntingdon Volleyball Tournament on Friday, Sept 15.
The W went 0-3 (19-25, 14-25, 15-25) against Huntingdon to open the tournament against the hosting school.
Despite the loss, Madison Lamon, freshman setter, did a great job of covering the court and recorded her first career double-double. The Russellville, Ala. native recorded 18 assists with 13 digs to lead the Owls in both categories.
On the offensive side of the ball, Haley McMurphey led the team with five kills on 15 total attacks for a .200 kill percentage.
As a team, the Owls recorded 22 kill on 100 total attacks, 22 assists, three service aces, 42 digs, and 2.0 blocks for 27.0 points.
"Although we struggled in serve receives across the board, our setters did a good job of hustling to get to the ball and make some great plays," commented head coach Roxanne Hernandez. "Unfortunately, we struggled to finish offensively and simply got out worked."
Versus Rust, the Owls went 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-13) for their second win of the season.
Tori Weir, freshman middle blocker, stepped up offensively to record for kills on seven total attacks for a .429 kill percentage. Lamon again stepped up as setter to record 12 assists and Megan Parks led the team with 12 digs.
"We did a much better job offensively and ran some different plays that we went over in practice this week," stated Hernandez. "Our goal is to continue to get our middles more heavily involved as we move forward this weekend."
The Owls will be back in action on day two of the Huntingdon Volleyball Tournament when they take on Miles College at 10 a.m. and LaGrange College at 12 p.m.
