Volleyball Shows Better Execution in Day Two of Huntingdon Tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Mississippi University for Women volleyball team put up a good effort in day two of the Huntingdon Volleyball Tournament. Facing some really tough teams, the Owls showed more spirit and was more efficent in executing the plays to put up one of their best fights of the season. Despite the effort, the Owls (2-10) go 0-2 in day two of the tournament.

In the first match of the day, The W fell 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 11-25, 18-25) to Miles College.

Facing an equally matched team, the Owls and the Golden Bears constantly exchanged leads. For the first time this season, The W volleyball team prevented a shutout by winning the first set of the match.

Loren Schmitt, freshman defensive specialist, was the driving force behind the Owls offense. The Mt. Juliet, Tenn. native put up six kills on 25 total attacks. She also recorded one assist two service aces and eight digs for 8.5 points.

Haley McMurphey, sophomore outside hitter, led The W defense with 10 digs. She also tallied five kills on 12 total attacks for a .417 attack percentage.

Madison Lamon, freshman setter, led the Owls in assist with 18 and tallied two kills, five digs, and 2.5 total assists.

Other standout Owls were Mary Grace Prine and Tori Weir. Prine led the team in blocks with two solos and three assists and Weir collected six kills on 22 total attacks.

As a team, the Owls recorded 24 kills on 99 total attacks for a .051 kill percentage. They also tallied 25 assists, three service aces, 51 digs, two block solos, eight block assists, and 33.0 points.

In the final match of the tournament, the Owls went 0-3 (20-25, 12-25, 15-25) against LaGrange College.

Kayla King, freshman outside hitter, led the Owls offense with five kills on 21 total attacks and tallied one service ace and three digs.

Defensively, freshman Megan Parks drove The W with eight digs and Tori Weir led the Owls with three blocks and two block assists.

As starting setter, Lamon once again led the Owls in assist will 11 and tallied on kill, four digs, and one block assists.

As a team, the Owls recorded 13 kills on 83 total attacks, 13 assists, five service aces, 27 digs, three block solos, four block assists, and 23.0 points.

The Owls will be back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 19 when they travel to Martin Methodist. The first serve is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
