JACKSON, Miss. – The Mississippi University for Women men's soccer team fell 6-0 to Millsaps College on Sunday, Sept. 17. The W drops to 0-5-1 on the season and the Majors improve to 4-1-1.
The Owls had a good first half against the Majors but struggled in the second half in preventing scoring opportunities for the opposition.
"Today's match at Millsaps should serve as a learning experience for our team," said head coach Tim Gould. "We were organized in the opening half and in the right spots for most of the 45 minutes. At the beginning of the second half, they jumped on us and gained momentum with early goals."
Despite the lapse in defense in the second half, the Owls were able to make good offensive decisions to put shots on the board.
Four minutes into the second half, Jacob Johnson, senior forward, recorded the first shot of the match for the Owls to push The W offense. After that first shot, Tazz Sparks and Nathan Wilson were both able to plant a shot on goal each and Johnson recorded a second shot to lead the Owls in shot attempts.
As starting keeper, Selvin Lopez, freshman from Memphis, Tenn., made 10 saves with five goals allowed in 66 minutes of play. Jakob Williams entered the match in relief with 23 minutes left to tally one save with one goal allowed.
As a team, the Owls record four shots with two on goal and the goalkeepers made 11 saves.
The Owls will be back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 20 when they travel to West Point, Ga. to face Point University. Kick-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
