COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Mississippi University for Women men's soccer team fell, 3-0, against Birmingham-Southern on a hot Sunday afternoon at Sprint Mart Field at the Columbus Soccer Complex. With the home loss, the Owls fall to 0-7-1 overall, while the Panthers improve to 4-3-1.
"Today's collective effort was our best during a complete 90 minute match," said head coach Tim Gould. "We were organized defensively and did a much better job being dangerous in our attack. We had multiple opportunities to score today during the run play and with set pieces. The men should be proud of their effort today and our improvement during the last week."
The Owls forward and midfielders pushed Panthers hard throughout the match to open up scoring opportunities. Late in the first half, Jacob Johnson got in perfect scoring position but an initial bad touch closed the window.
Early in the second, Paxton Bounds set up a great assist for Kyle Rodriguez but Panther goalie Kurt Moore came out of the goal to intercept the play.
The W defenders did a much better job this match keeping the potential BSC scorers away from the goal. Owls goalie John McGee saw less action against the Panthers and saw a decrease in the amount of saves he needed to make.
Playing the entire 90 minutes, McGee made six saves with three goals allowed to fall to 0-5-1 on the season.
Other standout Owls are Johnson who accomplished two shots with one shot on goal and Will Jones with one shot on goal.
As a team, the Owls tallied seven shots wit two shots on goal.
MUW will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 29 when they travel to Oakwood University in Huntsville, Ala. The Owls are scheduled to take on the Ambassadors at 1 p.m.
