COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Mississippi University for Women's volleyball team fell 3-1 to Tougaloo College on Friday, Sept. 29. The Owls fought hard against the Lady Bulldogs but were unable to grab the victory to fall 4-14 on the season.
The Owls started out on a role in set one besting the Lady Bulldogs 6-1, until Tougaloo went on a scoring run to tie the match 6-6. For the rest of the set, The W and Tougaloo exchanged leads. Toward the end of the set, the Lady Bulldogs were able to pull ahead to take the set, 25-18.
The Owls covered the court and gave it their all in the second. They jumped ahead of the Bulldogs in set two and did not relinquished the lead. The W stumbled at set point and allowed Tougaloo to advance from 15 points to 22. After a failed serve by Tougaloo, the Owls took the final point to take set two, 25-22, and tie the game 1-1.
The third set belonged to the Lady Bulldogs. They took an early lead and stayed ahead of the Owls to win the set 25-9.
In the fourth and final set of the game, the Owls mounted a good offense against Tougaloo. After a series of errors, The W fell behind but were rewarded with a series of mistakes by the Lady Bulldogs. The two teams tied the game at 17 but Tougaloo was able to outlast the Owls to take the set and the match 25-23.
Loren Schmitt and Kayla King led the MUW offense with eight kills each. Allyson Murff led the team in assists with 27 and tied Sadie Mitchell with 10 digs to lead the defense.
The Owls will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 30 when they take on Hiwasee College and Bevill State Community College in a home tri-match. The first game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
