Volleyball Delivers First Set Victory of the Season at Belhaven Tourney

JACKSON, Miss. – The Owls volleyball team returned to Heidelberg Gymnasium on Saturday, Sept.1 for day two of the Belhaven Volleyball Tournament. The W showed great determination and hustled through two matches to pick up its first set win of the 2018 season. The Owls push themselves throughtout the day but were unable to convert the effort in to match wins, falling 3-0 to Belhaven in match and 3-1 to Central Baptist College in match two.

Against Belhaven, the Owls allowed errors at crucial moments to halt their momentum. The W struggled to rise above its missteps to drop the sets 11-25, 10-25, and 9-25.

Tori Weir, sophomore middle blocker, took control of the Owls offense. In the three sets against Belhaven, Weir recorded 15 total attacks for five kills to lead her team. At the net, the Columbus, Miss. native along with Mary Grace Prine was also responsible for one block assist.

On the defensive side of the ball, Madison Lamon, Sadie Mitchell, and Megan Parks all collected five digs each to keep the rally going when the team needed it.

In match two versus Central Baptist, the Owls pushed for a big comeback to grab their first set victory of the season. In the 3-1 loss, Owls fell 25-15, 25-9, and 25-14 but took set three 25-23.

Showing improvements on the day's earlier match, Weir stepped up once again to lead her team with eight kills on 20 total attacks. Hannah O'Barr also had a good offensive game to collect six kills on 25 total attacks.

Defensively, Courtney Poole took over libero duties for the first time this season to lead her team with 15 digs.
