Late Inning Comebacks Put Baseball Ahead of Tougaloo

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Late inning comebacks, put the Owls back in the game for a doubleheader sweep of Tougaloo College on Monday, April 1.

GAME ONE (W, 4-2)

Despite having an equal number of hits, The W was able to outlast the Bulldogs in game one for a 4-2 victory.

Tougaloo struck first in the top of innings with a run scored on a ground out and a run scored on a double to right field.

In the second inning, the Owls made their way home with Reese Wagner singling to second base to allow Brandon Jones to score.

The W pulled ahead of the Bulldogs in the fifth, tying the game on a single by Cody Brewington and grabbing the lead on a two-run homer by Damain Benefield.

The Owls defense held strong for the remainder of the game to keep Bulldogs from scoring and closing the game with the 4-2 victory.

Zachary Reimann, a freshman left-handed pitcher, was credited with the win on the mound. The Westwego, La. native pitched the entire 7-inning game for two strikeouts, one walk, and two earned runs.

Brewington led the Owls at the plate with a 2-for-3 appearance for one RBI and one run while Benefield led the offense with a home run for 2 RBIs.

Coach Wolfe's Thoughts

"Zach Reimann really was outstanding today for us on the mound. He was getting ahead all day, and he did a great job keeping them off balance. Really proud of him, said head coach, Matthew Wolfenbarger." "Our offense wasn't at its best but we found a way to score when we needed to. Trey Petite had a huge double to get us going, and Damain Benefield's home run obviously was huge as well."

GAME TWO (4-2)

The Bulldogs broke the seal in the top of the second inning with a single for an unearned run.

The Owls tied the score in the bottom of the third when Leon "Trey" Petite sent a sacrifice fly to center field to allow Eiland Cleckler to come home.

The score remained 1-1 until the top of the fifth when Tougaloo grabbed the lead, scoring a run on a single to left field.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Owls racked up several runs to gain its first lead and claim the win. Will Peters came home on a sacrifice fly by RJ Cox and Prince Tolbert collected two RBIs on a single to give The W a 4-2 lead.

David Standifer improved to 3-2 on the mound, pitching six of seven innings. The sophomore from Mobile, Ala. delivered two strikeouts and tallied six hits for one earned run.

At the plate, Johndavid Birdsong led his team for a 2-for-3 appearance with one run while Owls senior Prince Tolbert led the offense with two RBIs on one hit.

Coach Wolfe's Thoughts

"This was a great team win. Really proud of David Standifer. He made a few adjustments in his last pen, and I thought he pitched his best game of the year tonight, said head coach, Matthew Wolfenbarger." "Our offense found a way to get it done again. We had about 7 quality at-bats in a row in the 6th inning to get the lead. John David Topik did a great job coming out of the pen for us to pick up a big save. Really proud of the effort and fight from our guys."
