Box Score 2 SEWANEE, Tenn. – The W volleyball team (3-8) did not get the finish it wanted in the 2019 Sewanee Volleyball Invitational. After an amazing day one, defeating Agnes Scott College 3-0, the Owls were unable to repeat their performance on day two with losses to Sewanee: The University of the South (7-8) and LaGrange College.
Match One (L, 3-0)
The Owls started off sluggish but increased their effort during the match-up against Sewanee: The University of the South. Despite the adjustment, The W volleyball team was unable to bounce back from the late start to fall 3-0 (25-8, 25-19, 25-14) to the Tigers of Sewanee in day two of the Sewanee Volleyball Invitational.
Senior outside hitter Haley McMurphey put up 17 total attacks with five kills to lead the Owls offense. The Caledonia, Miss. native added eight digs and three blocks assist to the effort.
Senior setter Mary Grace Prine edged out junior libero Sadie Mitchell 11-10 in digs to lead the Owls offense. The Hattiesburg, Miss. native also put up six assists and one total attack.
"Unfortunately, a slow start in the hole with unforced errors, in the beginning, set the tone for us," explained head coach Roxanne Hernandez. We struggled to get in a rhythm and Sewanee played great front row and back row defense to keep us at bay.
Match Two (L,3-0)
Just last weekend at the Belhaven/ Millsaps Invitational, The W defeated LaGrange in five sets. This time around, the Owls were unable to repeat the feat, dropping their final match of the day 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-21).
For the first time this season, freshman outside hitter Brooklyn Navarre stepped out of her shell to lead the Owls offense. On the front row, the Chelsea, Ala. native put up 10 total attacks for five kills. She was followed closely by junior Tori Weir who put up 13 total attacks for the same number of kills.
In her second outing of the day, Prine once again led her team in assist. The senior setter recorded seven assist, four digs, and six total attacks.
From the back row, Mitchell, the libero, tallied eight digs.
For her effort during the entire tournament, Tori Weir was named to the Sewanee Invitational All-Tournament Team.
