Owls Chase Elusive Rally Point in 3-0 Loss Versus Lane

Box Score

COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls volleyball team fell to the Lane Dragons in a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-16) sweep on Thursday night in pre-weekend action.

The W fell victim to the pursuit of the final point, falling behind early in the late set but keeping up with Lane in the first two. The struggle to get the rally point crippled the Owls and kept their hitting at just .088 for the match. Freshman Lacey Evans tied Junior Tori Weir with eight kills on the night for the team-high and senior Haley McMurphey had three on a match-high of 30 total attacks.

Mary Grace Prine entered the game from the bench and made an impact in the setter position. The senior from Hattiesburg, Miss. tallied a team-high 13 assists while collecting two digs and four total attacks.

On the back row, libero Sadie Mitchell led the Owls defense. The junior from Corinth, Miss. went low for 11 digs, edging out McMurphey by one.

"Today was a statistically positive day for us on a whole, but [we] had trouble finishing" The W head coach Roxanne Hernandez said. "Our defensive efforts were good and we were able to get our middles in action, but we just struggled to maintain momentum and rally for points. We are looking for the mindset to remain humbled and hungry as we go into this weekend's road matches."

The W is now 3-10 on the season as it enters the weekend's tri-match at Huntingdon College. On Saturday, Sept. 21, the Owls will face Pensacola Christian College and Huntingdon.
