Box Score 2 Jackson, MS. – The W softball team traveled to Jackson, Mississippi to play in the Millsaps Tournament. The Owls played two games today and took the win both games. The Owls faced and beat Austin College in the first-morning game, 9-2, and the University of Dallas in game two, winning 3-2.
Game One Against Austin College (W, 9-2)
On the mound for the Owls was junior right-handed pitcher Mackenzie Denton. Denton only allowed 6 hits with 5 strikeouts. Junior pitcher Brooklyne Eubanks came in to close the game in the 7th inning.
The Owls wasted no time on the offensive end scoring in the first inning. Senior Jana Newell bunted to move junior Katie Williams over and an error by Austin College allowed Williams to score for the first run of the game. Newell found her way to third and a hard ground ball by junior Megan Cummins pushed her in.
Junior Kelsie Gerhart singled into centerfield collecting an RBI herself by scoring sophomore Megan James. The W went up 3-0 in the first inning against the Kangaroos. The Owls tacked on 1 run in the 2nd inning giving them the lead, 4-0.
The Kangaroos scored 2 of their own in the top of the third. The Owls were quick to strike back with 2 more runs of their own, taking the lead 6-2. The Owls added 2 more runs in the 4th inning and 1 more run in the 6th inning, widening their lead to 9-2.
James led the team with 3 RBIs and Newell led the team at the plate with a 2-for-4 appearance.
Game Two Against University of Dallas (W,3-2)
Starting the second game on the mound for the Owls was junior Kaitlyn Parrish. Parrish held her ground only allowing 5 hits with 6 strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work. Sophomore Amelia Stalter came in as a relief in the 5th inning. Stalter did not give up any hits with 2 strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
The W's offense broke through in the third inning. Senior Madison Fields hit a single to start off the inning for the Owls. Sophomore Lauren Duckworth bunted for a hit, moving Fields into scoring position. An error by the Crusaders loaded the bases for the Owls. Junior Austyn Holden singled up the middle scoring Fields for the first run of the game. James had a sacrifice fly to centerfield which allowed Newell to tag up and score to increase the lead to 3-0.
The Crusaders' offense retaliated in the bottom of the third with two runs of their own. The W's offense remained quiet for the rest of the game but had defensive stops to prevent the Crusaders from scoring.
Junior Megan Cummins led the Owls at the plate with a 2-for-3 appearance and picking up an RBI. James and Holden each had one RBI themselves.
The Owls will be back in action tomorrow morning at 9 am taking on Austin College again. They will play LaGrange College at 3 pm to close out the tournament.
