Ergle Walks Off Game 2

Columbus, MS – The Owls softball took on Centenary College from Louisiana in a doubleheader Tuesday night. The Owls fell in game one to Centenary, 6-3. Game 2 for the Owls was a thriller going into 8 innings with a walk hit by freshman Lillian Ergle to win the game, 7-6.

Game One (L,6-3)

On the mound again for the Owls was junior pitcher Mackenzie Denton to start the afternoon game off. Denton put in 5.1 innings of work with 5 strikeouts. In for her relief was junior Brooklyne Eubanks to finish off the game. Eubanks finished off the game for the Owls only allowing 2 hits.

The W's bats started off quickly again in the first inning. Senior Jana Newell got the Owls going at leadoff with a single to right field. Junior Kanisha Hodges had quality at-bat and drew a walk for the Owls. With bases loaded for the Owls, clean-up hitter junior Megan Cummins hit a shot to centerfield gap allowing Newell to score and everyone else advance. Sophomore Megan James followed up Cummins with a hard ground ball to allow another run to come in for the Owls, making it a 2-3 game. Junior Katie Williams collected an RBI with a deep fly ball to centerfield which allowed Holden to score tying the game at 3-3.

From there the Owls offense was pretty quiet, unable to push people across the plate. The Owls fell 6-3 against Centenary College.

Game Two (W, 7-6) 8 Innings

Starting on the mound the second game for the first time for the Owls was Sophomore Amelia Stalter. Stalter worked for 5.2 innings with only allowing 3 earned runs and 3 strikeouts. Coming in relief again for the Owls was Eubanks. Eubanks finished off the remaining 2.1 innings with 3 strikeouts of her own.

The W was able to push a run across in the first inning with a single by James which allowed Holden to score, putting the Owls up 1-0.

Junior Kelsie Gerhart started the Owls offense off in the 4th inning with a line drive to right field. Gerhart had a triple and an error by the catcher allowed her to score. Williams kept things going with a triple hit to right-center. Senior Madison Fields hit her home run of the season sending it over left field, 4-0.

Centenary College's late rally in the 6th and 7th innings gave them the led 4-6 going into the bottom of the 7th inning. The Owls offense dug deep. Denton singled to right field to get the bats going for the Owls. A double by Holden pushed a run across cutting into the lead 5-6. With 2 outs, Gerhart hit a hard ground ball that the second baseman could not handle allowing Holden to score tying the game at the bottom of the 7th inning.

The Owls defense stopped Centenary from scoring in the top of the 8th inning.

With Fields at third and 2 outs, Ergle hit a hard ground ball through the infield walking it off for the Owls.

The Owls softball team will be back in action this afternoon with a doubleheader taking on Christian Brothers University starting at 3 pm.
