Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Freshman
Vini Lopes' goal in the 50th minute broke a scoreless match and was enough to propel The W men's soccer team to a 2-0 road win at Oakwood University. The victory evened the Owls season record at 4-4.
For Lopes, the goal was his 10th of 2021. That ties him for second in the nation in the USCAA Division I men's soccer for most goals scored this season.
Paulo Carneiro assisted on Lopes' match-winning goal.
The W added some insurance in the 75th minute when
Stephon Walker hit the back of the net with his second goal of the year that made it the final 2-0 score.
But the win was not without some anxious moments for The W. The Owls were held at bay by the Ambassadors the entire first half, and better than four minute of the second, before Lopes broke the deadlock.
MUW out-shot OU by a 15-4 margin for the match. The W defense was stellar, as goalkeeper
David McCutchen secured the team's second shutout of the season, thanks to his three saves. His Ambassadors' counterpart turned away six shots on-goal by the Owls' attackers.
The W also had eight corner kicks, compared to just three by Oakwood.
The Owls will next travel to Keene, Texas, for a pair of games at Southwestern Adventist University. Kickoff on Sunday will be at 1 p.m. and on Monday at 5 p.m.
