Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla. – The men's soccer team for the Mississippi University for Women saw both its win streak, as well as its scoreless streak, come to an end with its 1-0 overtime loss at Pensacola Christian College. But the Owls (6-5) did not go quietly and overcame some adversity along the way in the setback.
The loss snapped The W's win streak at three matches. It also upended the MUW scoreless minutes skein at 384 match minutes without surrendering a goal.
MUW played two-thirds of the match down a player after
Kai VanCourt received a red card in the 27th minute of action. Despite the disadvantage, The W defenders warded off the Eagles' attackers until finally surrendering a goal 3:32 minutes into the first overtime segment.
The Owls also were minus starting goalkeeper
David McCutchen – the architect of the bulk of those scoreless minutes – after he was injured in the 65th minute of play.
Kyle Rodriguez, who was a starting forward, stepped in for the final 29 minutes in the nets for The W.
The W was out-shot by the Eagles, 20-9 in the match. However, the Owls made it count when they did take a try, putting seven attempts (78 percent) on goal. PCC had a 55 percent effort for its shots.
McCutchen, unofficially, had 10 saves before his night was ended.
The MUW attack was led by freshman
Vini Lopes. Lopes had five total shots, four on-frame. Lopes had scored a goal in each of the previous three matches, as well.
The W will look to return to its winning ways next Tuesday (Oct. 12/3:30 p.m.) when it travels to Blue Mountain College.
